When Tennessee and Gonzaga faced one another in the 2007 Comcast Battle in Seattle, both teams had the look of being NCAA tournament worthy. After Selection Sunday, it became official. Both the Gonzaga Bulldogs and the Tennessee Volunteers received at large bids and are looking to make some noise in the tournament.
After finishing the season 25-7 Gonzaga was awarded the seventh seed in the Midwest Regional. The Bulldogs will face No. 10 seed Davidson College (26-6) Friday at 9:25 a.m. PT at the RBC Center in Raleigh, N.C. This meeting will be the first time the two schools have ever played each other.
Davidson, who enters the tournament leading the nation with a 22-game win streak, earned the Southern Conference automatic bid after finishing with a 26-6 overall record and 20-0 mark in league play. The Wildcats will be making their fourth NCAA Tournament appearance since the 2002 season and their 10th appearance overall.
Gonzaga will be making its 10th straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament and its 11th appearance overall. The Zags earned the West Coast Conference regular season title this season before falling at the University of San Diego, 69-62, in the conference championship game.
The winner of the Gonzaga/Davidson game will play the winner of the Georgetown University/University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) game Sunday.
Gonzaga’s opponent in the 2007 Comcast Battle in Seattle, the Tennessee Volunteers finished the season 29-4 and were selected as the No. 2 seed in the East Region. The Volunteers play the Patriot League champion American University Eagles (21-11) at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex in Birmingham, Ala., on Friday, March 21.
Should Tennessee win, it will play the winner of South Alabama-Butler on Sunday. This is the Volunteers third consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament and 16th overall.
For the second straight year, both teams that played in the Comcast Battle in Seattle have been selected to the NCAA tournament. Last season Gonzaga was a No. 10 seed and lost to No. 7 seed Indiana, 70-57. Nevada, who defeated Gonzaga in the 2006 Comcast Battle in Seattle, was a No. 7 seed and outlasted Creighton 77-71 in overtime before losing to No. 2 seed Memphis in the second round.
Out of the ten teams to play in the Comcast Battle in Seattle during its five year history, seven have gone on to play in to the NCAA tournament.
