Coach George Raveling has been chosen by Gonzaga University and Northwest Sports as the 2007 Comcast Battle in Seattle Honoree. His contributions to the sport along with his honesty, fairness, and integrity in his community, prove him worthy of this great honor. Raveling’s career in college basketball began when he played for Villanova. At Villanova he became an outstanding player and finished his career as an All American. From there he began coaching and eventually went on to hold such titles as Pac-10 and UPI Pac-8 Coach of the Year winner in 1976, the league’s coach of the year winner in 1983, and was recently inducted into the Pac-10 Basketball Hall of Honor.

Raveling’s coaching career started at his Alma Mater, Villanova, as assistant coach. He then went on to further his assistant coaching at Maryland, and progressed even further landing an assistant coaching job with Washington State University.

Raveling had an outstanding 11 years with Washington State University from 1972-1983 leading the Cougs to two NCAA tournaments. The first appearance was in 1980 and marked the first time WSU made the NCAA tournament field since 1941. He was one of the greatest coaches in Washington State basketball history, finishing his WSU career in 1983 with 167 wins, 136 losses, and seven winning seasons, including five straight from the 1975-76 campaign through the 1980 season.

During his time at WSU, Raveling helped as an assistant coach for the USA team at the 1979 Pan American Games and the West Regional coach at the 1979 U.S. Olympic Sports Festival. He again aided as an assistant coach during the 1980 U.S. Olympic Trials.

After his time with WSU, he landed the Head Coaching position at the University of Iowa where he led the Hawkeyes to back-to-back 20-win seasons and NCAA tournament berths in 1985 and 1986. Raveling is probably best known at Iowa for his recruits and outstanding players, including B.J. Armstrong, Kevin Gamble, Ed Horton, Brad Lohaus, Roy Marble and Greg Stokes, all of whom went on to play in the NBA. From 1986-1994 Raveling went to the University of Southern California where he advanced the Trojans to the NCAA tournament in 1991 and 1992, and competed in the NIT in 1993 and 1994.

Since Raveling’s retirement from USC in 1994, he has gone on to work with Nike and also wrote two books on rebounding drills entitled War on the Boards and A Rebounder’s Workshop. In addition, he has been found as a color commentator for FOX Sports Net where he has often been assigned to Pac-10 games. In 2004 Raveling was inducted into the Washington State Athletic Hall of Fame.

For all of Coach George Raveling’s accomplishments, we will be honoring him this December 28, in Seattle. The reception will be the evening before the 2007 Comcast Battle in Seattle game and will be held at the Fox Sports Grill. Located in downtown Seattle, the Fox Sports Grill, offers a great sports and dining atmosphere.
